Benjamin Banneker

​Benjamin Banneker (November 9, 1731 - October 9, 1806) was an African-American astronomer and clockmaker. He helped to survey the District of Columbia. He wrote and published Benjamin Banneker's Almanac which showed the sunrises, sunsets and phases of the moon for each year it was in print. He is also famous for petitioning Thomas Jefferson to abolish slavery.
